Roll Coat Application - ICD High Performance Coatings + Chemistries

CD produces quick videos for Glass Fabricators to accelerate their onboarding process. This roll coat application video describes best practices related to a popular method of glass coating.

Roll coating machine essential parts include:

  1. Flow of Glass
  2. Backup Roll
  3. Coating Roll
  4. Doctor Roll (Stationary)
  5. Coating Material

If you are applying OPACI-COAT-300® using a roll coater, it is extremely important that the roll coater is capable of "reverse roll coating". Applying OPACI-COAT-300® will only work using the "reverse roll coating" method.

While this video examines the roll coat operation, there is still much more to be learned by anyone who wants to become a true professional. The best way to become proficient at roll coating is with experience. Another important source of information is your local roll coat equipment distributor or the equipment manufacturer.

Before application, dirt must be removed effectively from the glass. By far the best method to remove dirt from the glass is with a mechanical glass washer.

Start by placing a piece of glass directly under the coating roll. Adjust the coating roll down so that it is almost touching the glass.

Close the gap between the coating roll and the doctor roll so they are nearly touching each other.

Place end dams on both sides of the rolls to prevent seepage or spill. End dams and manual pouring of the coatings are essential. Use of recirculation pumps are not recommended.

Set the belt speed and coating roll speed. Coating roll should be set to match the belt speed or sometimes slightly faster than the belt.

While the coating roll is on, carefully pour coating into the nip to prevent air bubbles.

Belt speed, roll speed, down pressure, and nip can all be adjusted individually or together to achieve target film thickness.

It is recommended to first use test pieces and adjust settings to achieve desired results prior to the production run.

ICD formulates and manufactures water-based coatings, resins, and chemicals in the US Pacific Northwest. We believe the world is a better place when innovative, green, sustainable products are specified and utilized. To support this, we offer education that explores why product performance and material selection matter. We are seen as experts in silicone coating technology and provide sustainable solutions where none previously existed. Topics include ultra-low VOC’s, the difference between solvent-based and water-based formulations, how coatings can be developed for improved energy reduction in the fabrication process, how ideal performance characteristics are achieved and more. ICD High Performance Coatings and Chemistries - We develop products to solve problems for our planet with clean chemistry.
